“Want we wandelen in geloof, niet in aanschouwen” (2 Cor 5:7)

Elk mens probeert zijn omstandigheden te optimaliseren om gelukkig te zijn. Het wezen van de mens is primair gericht op het verkrijgen van welzijn en welvaart. Maar, al te vaak blijken onze mogelijkheden daartoe beperkt; je inzet, je talenten, je hulpbronnen zijn ontoereikend om de gewenste situatie te creëren. Bij HiP in Nederland heeft het bestuur mij gevraagd als interim directeur. Al gauw bleek dat er meer (werk) te doen was dan ik kon overzien. Dat vind ik als manager onprettig, ik verlang grip te hebben op het werk en zo de toekomst te creëren…

Bij HiP zijn we altijd afhankelijk geweest van financiële giften. Je weet dat de wereld buiten het kantoor erg groot is; vrijwilligers, kerken, overheden, fondsen, maatschappelijke organisaties. Alles kan gebeuren: positieve en negatieve dingen. Voor je het weet is het de waan van de dag die je leidt. De vraag is: “Hoe ga je om met de onzekerheid van morgen?”

Eén van de dingen die ik het afgelopen jaar geleerd heb, is de dag te leven zoals die komt. En vooral me geen zorgen te maken over financiën of over andere dingen. Je zorgen maken over de loop der dingen kan dominant worden in je werk, in je leven. Je ‘zorgen maken’ wordt gevoed door de angst te mislukken. Te mislukken in je persoonlijke doel te komen tot welzijn. De paradox is echter dat zorgen ons verstand juist hindert in het vinden van dat geluk. Je zorgen maken, neemt relativeringsvermogen weg (tel je zegeningen) maar tast ook je onderscheidingsvermogen aan om goede besluiten te nemen die de situatie kunnen verbeteren. Voordat je het weet zit je in een vicieuze cirkel, ben je aan het tobben. Het is eigenlijk dom je zorgen te maken, je schiet er niets mee op.

Jezus leert ons dat Hij voldoende voorziet voor wat je die dag nodig hebt. Je hebt niet meer nodig dan dat (Matheus 6). God zorgt voor jou omdat je voor Hem van waarde bent. Hij heeft je lief en komt voor je op. Juist dat wij beperkt zijn in het beïnvloeden van onze omstandigheden maakt ons afhankelijk van God. De Vader zorgt voor zijn kinderen, daar mag je op rekenen (Rom 10:11). Daar reken ik op.

Je zorgen maken is eigenlijk een gebrek aan vertrouwen in God. Focus op God, niet op (geld)zorgen. Ook als de omstandigheden negatief lijken, richt je op Hem. Juist in God vind je alles wat je nodig hebt; vrede en welzijn. Laat de problemen van morgen in Zijn handen.

Every person tries to optimize their circumstances to find happiness. The nature of mankind is primarily focused on finding well-being and prosperity. But, often our efforts seem inadequate; our efforts, talents, resources are limited in creating the desired situation. I have been asked by the board of HiP Netherlands to become interim director. Soon I found that there was a lot more (work) to do than I could have known. As a manager I do not like that, I want to have grip on the job and thus create the future…

At HiP we have always been dependent on donations. The world outside the office is big; volunteers, churches, governments, funds, social organizations. Anything can happen, both positive as well as negative. Before you know it you’ll be swayed by the issues of the day. The question is: “How to deal with the uncertainties of the morrow?”

One of the things I have learned this past year is to take the day as it comes, and especially not to worry about finances or other issues. Worrying about the course of things can become central in your work and life. ‘Worrying’ is fed by fear of failure; failure in your personal goal of finding well-being. The paradox however, is that worrying clouds our mind in finding just that happiness. Worrying takes away sense of perspective (count your blessings), but also contaminates your power of judgment to make the right decisions that could help the situation. Before you know it you are in a vicious circle and worrying. It is rather foolish to worry; it doesn’t help you at all.

Jesus teaches us that He will provide enough for what you have of need today. You need nothing more than that (Matt. 6). God takes care of you, because you are of worth to Him. He loves you and stands up for you. Exactly because we are inadequate in influencing our circumstances makes us dependent on God. The Father cares for His children that you can count on (Rom. 10:11). That is what I count on.

Worrying is actually lack of trust in God. Focus on God, not on (money) worries. Even when the circumstances look negative, turn to God. In Him you will find everything you need; peace and well-being. Leave the problems of tomorrow in His hands.

“All things are possible, for he who believes” (Marc 9:23)

Lately I have come across people who are ready to pass judgment on the procedure and (financial) feasibility of HiP. What strikes me is that people seem to be asking questions to justify that HiP cannot work. Criticism is made, without any contribution to improvement. Opinions, concerns and problems expressed in this way can be dangerous and destructive, I will not stand for that. Advice however is constructive.

In the early years of HiP in The Netherlands there also were thousands of things in which HiP could have failed. If we had not had the courage then, HiP would not have existed today and thousands of families would not have received the help they needed. The challenges have been faced and faith has been transformed into actions. Sometimes against all odds. Obstinate enterprising, as the mayor of Zeist called it.

Negative opinions can lead to timidity. Were you to believe the others, then your dream and plan seems to be a mission impossible, one which you might just as well end. Actually what happens is that you are being advised to be equal to the world; do not stick your neck out. A prisoner of what might go wrong, you learn not take initiative. Fear kills development which consequently leads to timidity.

Jesus teaches us that all things are possible for he who believes. All things? Yes, all things, that is what is written. When you believe. Our belief is expressed in two ways: in our spirit (inner person) and in the words that we use (our mind). When you speak what you believe, without doubt in your heart, it will be yours (Marc 11:24). Faith is the basis of positive communication. Faith is the basis of managing a business. What one needs is spirit and courage.

The way a person acts is based on his thinking. The way we think is often acquired. You have acquired it from parents, friends, and colleagues. Mind: people are adventurous by nature, as you can see in children. Our environment has suppressed our wishes and that is wrong. When you want to change your life, you should change your thinking. My thinking has changed after the example of Jesus.

When you hold on to your faith, you are being called an optimist, or worse: accused of naivety. But personally I have made the choice: I’d rather get scraped on an adventurous journey, than be safely at home in my comfort zone. It’s a matter of choice. What’s your choice?

“Alles is mogelijk voor wie gelooft”  ( Markus 9: 23)

De laatste tijd kom ik regelmatig mensen tegen die hun oordeel klaar hebben over de werkwijze en (financiële) haalbaarheid van HiP. Wat me dan opvalt is dat iemand vragen stelt om argumenten te verzamelen die moeten bewijzen dat HiP niet werkt. Kritiek wordt geleverd zonder een bijdrage te leveren hoe het wel kan. Opinies die zo worden gedeeld kunnen destructief uitwerken. Op deze manier zorgen en problemen communiceren kan gevaarlijk zijn, hiertegen neem ik stelling in. Advies daarentegen werkt constructief.

In de begin jaren van HiP in Nederland waren er ook duizend redenen waarop HiP zou kunnen mislukken. Als we toen geen moed hadden getoond, zou HiP nu niet bestaan en zouden inmiddels duizenden gezinnen niet geholpen zijn. De uitdagingen zijn opgepakt en geloof is omgezet in daden. Soms dus tegen de stroom in. De Burgemeester van Zeist noemde het tegendraads ondernemen. Against all odds.

Negatieve opinies kunnen leiden tot timiditeit. Als je de ander moet geloven is jouw droom en plan een mission impossible, kun je er maar beter mee stoppen. Feitelijk wordt je aangeraden gelijkvormig te zijn aan deze wereld, niet je kop boven het maaiveld uitsteken. Gevangen door wat fout kan gaan, leer je af initiatief te nemen. Angst doodt ontplooiing met timiditeit tot gevolg.

Jezus leert ons dat alles mogelijk is voor wie gelooft. Alles? Ja, alles, zo staat het geschreven. Als je gelooft. Ons geloof vindt zijn expressie op twee plaatsen: in onze geest (innerlijke mens) en in de woorden die we gebruiken (verstand). Als je uitspreekt wat je gelooft, zonder twijfel in je hart, zal datgene van jou zijn (Mark. 11: 24). Geloof is de basis van positieve communicatie. Geloof is de basis van ondernemen. Wat je nodig hebt is durf, moed.

De wijze waarop een mens handelt wordt bepaald door zijn denken. De wijze waarop je denkt is vaak aangeleerd. Je hebt het geleerd van ouders, vrienden en collega’s. Let wel: van nature is een mens avontuurlijk ingesteld, je ziet dat bij kinderen. Onze omgeving heeft onze verlangens onderdrukt, en dat klopt niet. Als je je leven wilt veranderen, moet je veranderen hoe je denkt. Mijn denken is veranderd door voorbeeld te nemen aan Jezus.

Als je vasthoudt aan je geloof wordt je optimisme aangemeten, erger: naïviteit verweten. Maar persoonlijk heb ik de keuze gemaakt: liever een schram oplopen op een avontuurlijke reis, dan veilig thuis in je comfort-zone. Kwestie van keuze. Wat verkies jij?

Johannnes 20: 17

 Naar aanleiding van de Tv-uitzending door de EO waarin mijn levensverhaal werd getoond, zijn er veel reacties binnengekomen bij HiP. Een aantal van de reacties waren van mensen die het verdriet om iemand los te moeten laten herkenden. In mijn situatie ging het om het overlijden van mijn moeder, van wie ik veel hield. 

Soms moet je mensen waar je van houdt loslaten. Bijvoorbeeld je kinderen verlaten het ouderlijke huis, een vriend gaat op verre reis, een eerste onbeantwoorde liefde, voorbeelden genoeg. Er ontstaat regelmatig een paradox: verstand (loslaten) en emotie (vasthouden) vechten om voorrang. Loslaten gaat vaak gepaard met pijn. Waar komt de pijn vandaan? De pijn is gelegen in het feit dat de mens geschapen is om relaties aan te gaan, zich in liefde te verbinden met een medemens.  De schepping gaat over relaties (met God en de medemens) en wanneer relaties verbroken worden doet dat pijn.

De ontroerende geschiedenis van Maria Magdalena die Jezus ontmoet na Zijn opstanding uit de dood is opgetekend in Johannes 20. Maria huilt om het verlies van haar geliefde Meester. Persoonlijk geloof ik dat Jezus en Maria een speciale band hadden. Zij hadden een hechte vriendschappelijke relatie; een huwelijkse verbintenis en/of sexuele gemeenschap heeft echter nooit plaatsgevonden, anders had dit zeer belangrijke gegeven wel in de Bijbel gestaan. In de Bijbel staat geschreven dat Jezus aan alle verleidingen heeft blootgestaan, dus waarom niet de aantrekkelijkheid van een vrouw? Maar Hij hield zich bij zijn taak en roeping, door de Vader aan Hem gegeven. Wat resteerde is naar mijn overtuiging een zuivere, oprechte liefde voor Maria. Jezus openbaarde zich na zijn dood, niet voor niets als eerste aan Maria!

Bijzonder is dat Maria Hem niet mocht aanraken, terwijl anderen dat wel mochten.  De andere vrouwen grepen Zijn enkels en Thomas moest Hem zelfs aanraken vanwege zijn ongeloof. Blijkbaar maakt het verschil uit wie je mag vasthouden.

Maria mocht Jezus niet aanraken omdat haar aanraken,  vasthouden zou betekenen.  En dat kon niet. Jezus had nog werk te doen, Maria moest Hem vrijlaten. Sommige mensen mag je vasthouden, om ze te beminnen, te beschermen en te verzorgen. Andere mensen heb je los te laten. In beide gevallen, feitelijk in ons hele leven, staat de liefde centraal. Alleen uit die zich verschillend.

John 20: 17 (NIV)

Many reactions came in at the HiP office, after the television broadcast of my life story. Some of these reactions were from people who had experienced the loss of having to let go of a loved one. In my case it was my mother, whom I loved dearly.

Sometimes you have to let go people who you love. For example your children when they are leaving home, a friend who is going on a long journey, a first unrequited love, and so on. Quite often a paradox occurs: sense (letting go) and emotion (holding on) are fighting for precedence. Letting go often goes together with pain. Where does this pain come from? Pain lies in the fact that humans are made to be in relationship with each other, to be joined together in love with another human being. Creation is about relationships (with God and fellow human beings) and when relationships are broken it hurts.

The touching story of Mary Magdalene, who meets Jesus after his resurrection is recorded in John 20. Mary weeps for the loss of her beloved Master. Personally, I believe that Jesus and Mary had a special relationship. They had a close friendship; it wasn’t a matrimonial bond or sexual relationship, otherwise, such an important given would have been mentioned in the Bible. The Bible says that Jesus was exposed to all temptations, so why not the attractiveness of a woman? But He kept to His task and calling, given to Him by his Father. What was left, to me, was a pure, sincere love for Mary. Jesus revealed Himself after his resurrection firstly and with good reason to Mary!

Remarkable is that Mary wasn’t allowed to touch Him, while others were allowed to do so. The other women grabbed His ankles and Thomas even had to touch Him because of his disbelief. Apparently there is a difference in who you are allowed to hold on to.

Mary wasn’t allowed to touch Jesus, because that would mean holding on. And that wasn’t possible. Jesus still had work to do, Mary had to let Him go. Some people you can hold on to, to love them, protect them and to take care of them. Other people you need to let go. In both cases, actually in our whole life, love is central. It’s just expressed differently.

´I do not condemn you´ (John 8:11)

Last January I visited Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia. I was going to speak for a packed church on Sunday. The expectations were high. I had prepared the sermon thoroughly, but on the way over in the car I started to have doubts on the theme. When the time came to preach I had no idea what to talk about. I broke out in a cold sweat. Slowly another theme came to mind; freedom in Christ. But was this the right theme? Still I was anxious. Suddenly I saw a man standing in the front row. At first I noticed him for his plain clothes, a pair of jeans and a bright yellow T-shirt. I froze when I read the text on the T-shirt: In Christ we are free. To me this confirmed my thoughts and I gave one of the best sermons I had ever done.

The sermon was on the story of the adulteress, who was brought to Jesus by the Pharisees. The words spoken by Jesus then, are one of the most beautiful texts you can find in the Bible: “I do not condemn you.” Amazing. While she was caught in adultery and the crowd wanted to kill her, Jesus showed mercy and granted her freedom. Why?

The woman lived according to worldly standards. She committed adultery maybe for the money, the power or the position it gave her. A probing question in this story is; where was the man that was caught committing adultery with her? According to the Law of Moses, both man and woman should be killed. Why did the Pharisees let the man go? Maybe it was a man of standing and status, which made the crowd let him go. Unlike the woman, who wasn’t important (in their eyes).

Maybe the woman didn’t know better than to survive life this way. Jesus knew this. If you are not familiar with the guidelines and commandments of the Father, how would you know the value of them to protect your own life? As Jesus did not condemn this woman, the Church should also treat people who do not know God. It is not our task to judge people, but to help them by showing love. Mercy is a bridge to God. This way a relationship between man and Creator can start.

In Christ there is no condemnation, but freedom. He accepts you for who you are. He loves you, with all your good and bad character traits. His love provides freedom. “Go,” that is the freedom that Jesus gives. And a task that goes with it; “and sin no more.”

Arie van der Veer for “Nederland Zingt”, a dutch christian telvision program.  Arie and Annemarie Griffioen (the director) discovered that Freedom is the central theme in my carreer. Coming sunday the program ‘ll be broadcasted on Channel 1.

“Ik veroordeel u niet”  ( Joh. 8: 11)

In januari dit jaar bezocht ik voor HiP Addis Abeba, de hoofdstad van Ethiopië. Ik zou op een zondag spreken in een volgepakte kerk, van mij werd dus wel wat verwacht. Ik had de preek grondig voorbereid, maar tijdens de autorit naar de kerk begon ik zwaar te twijfelen aan het thema. Tegen de tijd dat de dienst begon had ik geen idee meer waarover ik moest spreken. Het klamme zweet brak me uit. Langzaam drong een mogelijk ander thema tot mij door: vrijheid in Christus. Maar was dit wel een goed onderwerp? Ik was nog steeds onzeker. Plots zag ik een man staan op de eerste rij. Hij viel mij in eerste instantie op door zijn sobere kleren, een spijkerbroek met daarop een knalgeel T-shirt. Ik verstarde toen ik de tekst las op dat T-shirt: In Christ we are free. Voor mij was dit een bevestiging en ik gaf daarna één van mijn beste spreekbeurten tot nu toe.

De spreekbeurt ging over het verhaal van de overspelige vrouw, die door de schriftgeleerden bij Jezus werd gebracht. De woorden die Jezus toen uitsprak, is een van de mooiere teksten die je kunt vinden in de Bijbel: “Ik veroordeel u niet”. Prachtig. Terwijl zij op overspel betrapt was en de menigte haar wilde doden, toonde Jezus alle barmhartigheid en schonk haar vrijheid. Waarom?

De vrouw leefde naar wereldse maatstaven, zij pleegde overspel misschien om het geld, de macht, of de positie die het haar gaf. Een indringende vraag in dit verhaal: waar was de man, die met haar betrapt was? Volgens de wetten van Mozes diende zowel man als vrouw gedood te worden.  Waarom hebben de schriftgeleerden de man laten gaan? Misschien was het een man van aanzien en positie waarop de menigte hem maar lieten gaan. In tegenstelling tot de vrouw, die niet belangrijk was (in hun ogen). 

Misschien kende de vrouw geen andere manier van (over-)leven dan deze. Jezus wist dat. Als je niet bekend bent met de richtlijnen en geboden van de Vader, of ze niet begrijpt, hoe kan je dan de waarde ervan onderkennen als bescherming voor je eigen leven? Zoals Jezus haar niet veroordeelde zo zou ook de Kerk moeten omgaan met mensen die God niet kennen. Het is niet onze taak mensen te (ver-)oordelen maar ze te helpen door liefde te tonen. Barmhartigheid is in deze een brug naar God. Zo kan een relatie ontstaan tussen mens en Schepper.

In Christus is geen veroordeling, maar vrijheid. Hij accepteert je zoals je bent, Hij houdt van jou, met alle slechte en goede karaktereigenschappen. Zijn liefde geeft vrijheid. “Ga”, dat is de vrijheid die Jezus geeft. Met daarbij ook een opdracht “en zondig niet meer”.

Noot: Vrijheid is ook het thema van mijn gesprek met Arie van Veer, voor Nederland Zingt. Arie en Annemarie Griffioen (de regisseuse) ontdekte vrijheid als centrale thema in mijn loopbaan.  Aanstaande zondag zal het programma op Nederland 1 te zien zijn.
